Needed to Purge

Last week I recieved my newest order of replacement herbs and spices from Penzey's and today I recieved a little suprise b-day package from Chilefire. All of this and my overloaded cupboard full of herbs, spices and other seasonings. Some old. Some new. Time to purge!

This was everything, old and new.
I tossed about a quarter of it.
And created a list of about 10 items I need to replace.

Wow -- that's impressive. How long had the oldest one sat around, in the far dark corner of the cabinet??? Just curious. I think I have a "Salad Supreme" from about three years ago...

Quite a collection! I still have a whole bunch that my dad gave me when I first moved out...talk about needing to purge!

What's your favorite spice?

On Wednesday night we actually threw out a can of ground cloves from 1806. Well, ok, that may be a bit of an expression, but it was McCormicks...in the metal can with the plastic top that opens three ways...! I haven't see the metal cans in AGES, so I have no idea how long we had that laying around.

My favorite spice...black pepper, just about every single thing I make gets it. Now, that's pretty common, so something a little less so...? I just made up that Middle Eastern 7 Spice blend-Bahart, I'm really enjoying that. It's funny, just having all those spices out and I can't decide on just one right now! Herbs: Basil, Thyme, Rosemary. I can do that, but the spices....I'm going to have to go with the blends right now.

I probably should do the same. I know I have spices in my cabinets from before I moved to the DC area .... in 1998!

What a great, eclectic collection. I spied some Nirmala's tins, some Liquid Smoke... and Mrs. Dash?

Well I can tell you that the tin of ground cloves was at a minimum 10 years old! I obtained it in a bunch of stuff I got from my great aunt back in college. I had no idea it was still in our cabinet!

My favorite spice is without question nutmeg. Favorite herb? Thyme.

Indeed, you do see Mrs. Dash in there. It's a secret spice blend that goes in quite a few recipes in our house!

Mrs. Dash has always been in my cupboard. I first started using it years ago in my rice and on a simple fried potato--this was when the rice/potato was the sole entree for dinner--when I had no money for anything else. So Mrs. Dash has just hung around since then. And when I'm looking for a quick chicken breast...a little Mrs. Dash.

Have you ever tried Montreal Steak Seasoning? That stuff is so good.

Barbara: It was in there, I might have tossed it because there was so little in the bottle, but we've used it many times!
