Lists of Seven

The folks at DC Food Blog have requested a response on their recent post, answering the following questions. Here they are!

7 things I want to make before I die:
1. Paella—no reason really, I just feel it would be challenging
2. Homemade Sausage
3. More veggies—I hear they are good for you
4. My own curry spice blend
5. Applesauce—J & T have made me jealous
6. Cheddar Cheese
7. Braised Firecracker Pork—one of the only dishes I’ve had at a restaurant and can’t figure out how to recreate, getting there though!

7 things I cannot do in the kitchen:
1. Carve a bird; turkey, chicken or otherwise
2. Sharpen knives
3. Quickly and properly chop an onion—that scar will last a long time
4. My rice never, ever comes out right!
5. Clams/Mussels/Oysters—not that I can’t, but I won’t.
6. Make a sublime cupcake—one that makes you cry with happiness & joy
7. Grow herbs in the kitchen—they always die when I have them indoors…outside, they are fine.

7 things that attract me to the kitchen:
1. The color Yellow, the day I get to design my own kitchen, it will be yellow!
2. Aromatic spices
3. My Kitchen-Aid, my child, my love, my precious
4. Freshly ground coffee
5. Pumpkin, it’s not just for pies! Must make Pumpkin Risotto SOON!
6. Cookie Jar—if I had one
7. Fresh Rosemary, Thyme & Ginger

7 things that I say most often in the kitchen:
1. It’s not ruined yet.
2. What’s for dinner?
3. I’ll only have one, thank you.
4. Mmm, it’s sooo good.
5. Taste this!
6. Why can’t I make rice properly?
7. Butter is good for you, right?

7 celebrity crushes in the food world:
1. Nigella Lawson—good one
2. Paula Deen
3. Alton Brown
4. Martha, yes Martha—can you imagine having access to that kitchen?
5. Julia Child
6. Betty Crocker—she’s held up well over the years!
7. Tyler Florence—but I don’t think that would be for the food

What am I missing?

How could I forget my beloved Aatish! So foolish! Narrowing it down to 7 is impossible!

We LOOOOOOOVE Aatish. It's a wonder that they are so empty. About the rice thing. Buy a rice cooker. No self-respecting Asian cooks rice on the stove. I am kind of fascinated by the two you of. I feel we're leading parallel lives. We have been together for five years and got married in 2003. I work for a national LGBT org and J runs a nonprofit. It's like the the queer wonky version of the Double Life of Veronique.

OK, now I'm convinced that we are, as I also work for a national GLBT group. Wait - are you me? Am I you?

And yes, I've thought about a rice cooker for ages. Just need to find a place for it...

P.S. I'm going to shamelessly plug my own blog, which I've decided to pull out of the cedar chest. Feel free to visit here:

Tee hee....a rice cooker would be nice....what would I get rid of....? Maybe the smaller of the two coffee pots? I have too many contraptions!

I will blame the emptiness at Aatish on the fact that only the cool people go there! I have had dreams about their food. Gawd it's soo good.

and I do need to add

10. Rice
11. Filomena's

and I understand that Krupin's isn't named Krupin's anymore...havne't been there in ages, so I don't know.

12. Spices

Hi Scott,

I found your site through DC Food Blog. GREAT WORK. I, too, am a foodie and being a southern gal now in DC, I like how some of your recipes appreciate southern food(sausage gravy = YUM). Keep eating!

Katie--thanks for visiting, come back again. I've been really busy in the last few weeks, so postings have been slow, they'll be back up to speed soon.

That Sausage Gravy recipe is one of the easiest and I do say the best Sausage Gravy I've had. Not once in a restaurant has it been nearly as good.

Although my grandmother was a little old white lady, she had a lot of southern soul in her. It certainly passed onto me and my love of food.

SPICES! Oh how we love Spices. When we were living in near Van Ness, J and I would have what we call Sweatpants Deluxe night. We'd change into t-shirts and sweatpants and order a pile of sushi from Spices along with the Wafu salad and scallion pancakes and veg out in front of the tv. This was usually coinciding with Amazing Race night.
