Long story short, at some point in my childhood we started calling Sloppy Joe's, i.e. Manwiches, Sloppy Bob's....Don't ask me where the story came from because I don't know where/why or how. But I do remember them being something that I enjoyed, both at home and at school. The school ones were only good with a slice of American cheese on them though.
Here is the recipe that I made tonight. I pulled it mostly from this online source.
I've made some alterations, so here is my recipe:
Sloppy Bobs
1 lb ground beef
Pinch of salt
Shake of Mrs. Dash
1 medium onion, diced finely
1 bell pepper, diced finely
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp coriander
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground pepper
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
3 TB brown sugar
2 tsp cider vinegar
1 1/4 cup water
1 6 oz can of tomato paste
and something extra:
1/2 tsp Zanzibar Cheromula from Nirmala's Kitchen. (I thought it would be good. It was, I'd add more in the future!)
In a large pan, brown the beef, while browning season with a little salt and Mrs. Dash....I always give my ground beef a little season, even if more is seasoning is coming later...it'll just taste better. Drain of most of the fat. Add the onions and peppers and cook for about 5 until the onions and peppers soft. When they are done, add in the spices and stir for about a minute. Add the water, cider vinegar and tomato paste. Allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes until hot, sloppy and bubbly.
Serve on hot roll and garnish with cheese if you like, I do!

I make Sloppy Joes with ground turkey sometimes. My recipe is easy - brown turkey, mix in canned stuff, put on bun. :-)
Where'd you get square bagels???
What kind of bread id you use?
J-lo found square bagels at safeway the last time he went to the store. So we used those. They were large enough, that just 1/2 was enough for a serving. So I brought a full one to work, 1/2 for breakfast with some PB on it and 1/2 for lunch with some Sloppy on it.
Actually I found them at Shoppers. But my understanding is that they're going to become ubiquitious in stores in the coming months. They're calling them "bagel bread."
Bagel bread? Fascinating. What will they come up with next? I've never seen anything like that. I've gotta start watching out for that.
Bless your heart, Scotte. Mandy and I made this last night and served on sandwich rolls. It was sooooooooo good- just sloppy enough!
Brunette: Excellent! They make great leftovers....mine were a touch spicy, which I liked, so if that's a concern for anyone...the overnight rest in the chillchest brings out some extra heat.
A slightly altered version of the recipe here:
